We have many delightful picnic spots in Wallingford to choose from, whether you want a quiet green space, a riverside spot, a play area for the children or somewhere dog friendly. Please see below some of our picnic gems in Wallingford.

Castle Gardens

Castle Gardens

The Castle Gardens are award winning gardens which offer a perfect quiet spot amongst the stunning romantic castle ruins.

The gardens offer a quiet space within walking distance of the town centre and offers space and shade spots which are perfect for a picnic. There are also plenty of benches for those wishing to take a seat.

Enjoy our newly planted bee and wildlife friendly flower areas. The Rose Garden has recently been replaced with bee friendly colourful hardy annuals which have been chosen as part of the Town’s summer display and really are blooming.

  • Dogs are not allowed in the Castle Gardens but are allowed in the adjoining Castle Meadows.
  • The Castle Ruins are of scheduled monument status & we would like to preserve our history for future generations, so any ball games or activities such as climbing on the ruins, which could damage them, are forbidden.
  • The Castle Mound is currently not open to the public.

  • 1st June until 30th September open 8:30am until 7pm

Riverside

The stretch of River Thames that passes through Wallingford is one of the most beautiful.

Watch the ducks and boats pass by whilst taking in the views of the river and magnificent Wallingford Bridge.

The Riverside offers lots of space to relax, there are shaded area’s and also picnic bench seating.

Visit the Riverside Splash Park and outdoor heated pool on your visit, for opening times and further information on the pool and splash park please visit the Better Leisure Website. Better manage these facilities on behalf of South Oxfordshire District Council.

Dogs are welcome along the Riverside but not in the Splash Park and Pool area.

Bullcroft

The Bull Croft is large park located in central Wallingford.

The Bull Croft has lots of green space, shaded areas and benches for those wishing to take a seat. The Bullcroft has Saxon banks and ditches at the northern end of the park and the whole park is a scheduled monument steeped in history.

The park is great for families, there are two playgrounds, one aimed for infants and one for older children.

The park also has tennis courts, basketball courts and space for ball games available for everyone to use free of charge.

Dogs on leads welcome.

Kinecroft

The Kinecroft is an area of open grassland with plenty of space for picnics.

The Kinecroft is a scheduled monument and is bounded on the western and southern sides with a continuation of the earthen Saxon ramparts.

The Kinecroft is home to many of Wallingford events such as Bunkfest, the Festival of Cycling, the Classic Car Rally and Bonfire night.

Dogs on leads are welcomed
