cholsey and Wallingford railway

The Cholsey and Wallingford Railway Preservation Society “(CWRPS”) runs the heritage railway, along a track-bed that is owned by Wallingford Town Council.

CPRWS is recognised by both the Town Council and SODC as an important tourism asset. This weekend (15/16 July) is the Teddy Bear Weekend when children with their favourite Teddy can ride between Wallingford and Cholsey. To find out more, including how the railway links with the Agatha Christie Trail, follow the link to the website.

Cholsey and Wallingford Railway (known as “the Bunk”) is run by volunteers from the Cholsey and Wallingford Railway Preservation Society “(CWRPS”). They run a number of steam and diesel days during the year, which bring tourists into the town. They also provide “living history” events such as the re-enactment (for local schools) of the evacuation of children in during WWII. On days that the Bunk is running, the café, shop and museum will be open and, weather permitting, there will also be a bouncy castle.

Since last year, GWR has offered a day ticket from anywhere on GWR’s network to Cholsey that includes a return trip on the Bunk on the days that it is running.  This links into the Agatha Christie Trail, with many people choosing to walk from Cholsey station to Cholsey Parish Church (where Dame Agatha is buried) and then along the trail to Wallingford.  They return to Cholsey on the Bunk, once they have seen Dame Agatha’s house and enjoyed our town.  If you haven’t tried this yourself, consider taking the Bunk from Wallingford and walking back along the trail.

There is an opportunity to do this this weekend (Saturday 15th July and Sunday 16th July), which is the Teddy Bear Weekend: children with their favourite Teddy can ride half-price.  If you don’t fancy the walk, you can always come back on the train once you have visited the church.

Later on this summer there will be a special Diesel Weekend over the August Bank Holiday (25th – 27th August) and of course over Bunk Fest the Bunk will be running, with performers on the trains and on Wallingford station.

Wallingford Town Council is keen to see the Bunk thrive, and we will   assist CWPRS to get planning permission for the installation of a Victorian engine shed that has been donated to them.
